A caricature of the Old Testament is that God is wrathful, vengeful, and angry and we are holding to a thin cord above the flames of perdition. While a cursory reading of the reading from Wisdom may seem to propose this, the word “hope” and its connection with repentance of sins indicates that believers are called to a different attitude toward God.
