The Blessed Virgin Mary is often lauded for saying "Yes" to God's request that she bear the Word Incarnate. In this preaching, Br. Paul explores Mary's radical obedience to God, showing how both listening and loving were at the heart of Mary's virtuous response. In contrast to Mary, King Ahab of the first reading does not listen to God, and so is a model of disobedience rooted in false piety. Lent, therefore, is a season not just to take up pious actions; it's a season to work on being attentive to the present moment and to the task at hand; a season to develop our listening skills; and a season to be more generous in given ourselves in loving service to God and our neighbors.
