Dominican Student Gathering 2016

This past weekend St. Dominic Priory in St. Louis, where the Central Province and Southern Province Dominicans do their joint formation, hosted the Interprovincial Student Gathering. Each year, one of the four Dominican provinces in the U.S. hosts the gathering. Two brothers are then sent to attend the gathering from among the provinces that are not hosting for that year. The gathering features a series of talks and an opportunity for the student brothers to meet one another and discuss their experiences of formation in the studentate.

This year twenty-four students brothers were in attendance for the gathering, twenty brothers from the Central and Southern Province and four brothers from the Eastern Province (Province of St. Joseph) and Western Province (Holy Name of Jesus Province). The gathering began on Friday evening with a talk delivered by Fr. Benedict Viviano, OP a New Testament scholar on the Gospel of Mathew, entitled, "The Gospel of Mathew and St. Dominic: Reflections on Democracy."  In the talk, Fr. Benedict examined the biblical foundations for a theology of democracy.

Saturday morning featured a Eucharistic celebration and preaching from Fr. Scott O'Brien, OP, the novice master for the Southern province.  Following Mass, Professor Eleanore Stump, a lay Dominican and the Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University, gave a talk entitled, "The Virtue of Humility and Dominican Life." Professor stump explored moral and intellectual humility in Aquinas as a virtue and its relationship to magnanimity. That evening, the brothers gathered for fellowship and recreation, entertainment facilitated by one of the Southern Province brothers.

Finally on Sunday morning, the student brothers gathered together to discuss their current experiences of formation and hopes for future interprovincial student gatherings and possibilities for collaboration among the four provinces. Please pray for the all the Dominican student brothers in formation as they continue to discerning the best ways to preach the Gospel, understanding the signs of the times. The Dominican preaching still burns bright as the Order celebrates it's 800th jubilee since its founding. St. Dominic, pray for us!
