The Ordination Liturgy
The Opening Rite
The Mass begins with the Processional Hymn Lift High the Cross, followed by the Sprinkling Rite with the Schola singing Springs of Water. Then the Schola leads the assembly in singing the Gloria with music from: Mass of the Angles and Saints.
The Liturgy of the Word
The First Reading is Acts 10:37-43; the Responsorial Psalm is "Go out to the word and teach all nations;" the Second Reading is 2 Corinthians 4:1-2,5-7; followed by the Gospel from John 15:9-17.
Election of Candidates for the Diaconate and Priesthood
The candidates are called to ordination, presented to the Bishop by the Prior Provincial, and the Bishop, having inquired about their suitability, accepts them for ordination. All present give their assent by saying, "Thanks be to God." It is followed by the Bishop's homily.
Promise of the Elect for the Diaconate and Priesthood
The Bishop examines the resolve of the elect to discharge each of the particular orders. Each candidate kneels before the Bishop and promises respect and obedience to the diocesan bishop and to his religious superior.
This is followed by the Litany of Supplication, which involves the Litany of the Saints.
Ordination of Deacons
Here we have the "Laying on of Hands and Prayer of Ordination to the Diaconate." The Bishop lays his hands upon the head of each of the elect in silence. Then, with the elect kneeling before him, the Bishop sings or says the Prayer of Ordination.
Then the newly ordained Deacons are vested in vestments proper to their Order. All the while the Schola sings "Blessed Are They Who Dwell in Your House O Lord." This is followed by the "Handing on the Book of Gospels." The newly ordained Deacons kneel before the Bishop and receives the Book of the Gospels.
Ordination of Priests
Here we have the Ordination Rite to the Priesthood. Beginning with the Prayer of Supplication, the elect come forward and the Bishop invites all to pray for them. This is followed by the Laying on of Hands and Prayer of Ordination to the Priesthood. The Bishop lays his hands upon the head of each of the elect in silence. Then, all the Priests present lay hands upon the elect. All the while the schola sings "Veni Sancti Spiritus."
Next in the Rite is the Anointing of Hands and Handing Over of the Bread and Wine. The newly ordained Priests are assisted in putting on the vestments proper to their Order. All the while the Schola sings "You are a Priest Forever." Then the Bishop anoints the palms of the newly ordained Priests. The gifts of bread and wine from the faithful are presented to the newly ordained Priests.
The Bishop concludes the Rite of Ordination by giving the newly ordained Priests and Deacons the fraternal kiss. Likewise, the Priests in the sanctuary give the newly ordained Priests the fraternal kiss. The Schola sings "You Are My Friends."
Liturgy of the Eucharist
The Mass parts from the Liturgy of the Eucharist are from Mass of the Angles and Saints.
The Communion Rite
The Communion Hymn is verse text by James Quinn, SJ, Take and Eat. The hymn of Thanksgiving sung by the Schola after Communion is Ave Maria.
Closing Remarks and Concluding Rite
Fr. Charles Bouchard, OP, Provincial of the Province of St. Albert the Great gives the closing remarks followed by the Concluding Rite. The Bishop gives a blessing to the newly ordained. Then the newly ordained Priests join the Bishop in blessing the assembly. The Recessional Hymn is O God Beyond All Praising.
Please pray for our newly ordained Priests and Deacons as they strive to grow in holiness and to faithfully serve Christ and His Church.
